In Eastern European countries, including Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the symbolic food of Christmas is carp. Carp are often kept in clean freshwater containers before slaughter, which is thought to improve the flavour. At Christmas that container is traditionally the family bathtub, where the fish swims for a few days before the main festive meal on Christmas Eve.
